Veterans Memorial Bridge

Orlando

The 1,884-foot long Veteran’s Memorial Bridge was constructed to replace an existing bascule bridge spanning the Halifax River in Daytona Beach, Florida. The designers employed unique, high-level concrete arches to create this monumental signature landmark.  The design presented challenges to the geotechnical engineering elements of the project. The 221-foot central span arch and steep approaches generated significant lateral loads on the foundations. Anticipated river scour depths up to twenty feet compounded the lateral load challenge. Ardaman’s exploration included borings drilled from a barge extending 110 feet below the river’s mud-line, and the foundation recommendations required 30-inch square, precast concrete battered, and plumb piles. The bridge and the design team led by WSP were designated as a Top 10 Roads and Bridges project of 2020 by Roads and Bridges Magazine.
