Earthen Dams

Ardaman & Associates, Inc. has extensive experience in the design, construction, operation, maintenance, inspection, monitoring and abandonment of impoundments and earthfill dams. Our staff has been involved in the design of over one hundred such facilities in the United States (mostly Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Illinois, Utah, North Carolina) and abroad (Canada, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East).

Many of these facilities are still in operation and are inspected on an annual, or as needed basis by our firm to ensure proper maintenance, operation and safety. We currently inspect over one hundred miles of earthen dams annually.

We have completed Phase II Dam Safety Analyses for several impoundments with emphasis on hazard potential, overtopping and spillway/dam height design modification analyses. Our in-house hydrology/hydrogeology staff is experienced in the evaluation and sizing of spillway structures which often prove to be deficient for small earthen dams. In addition, we are well experienced in the evaluation and interpretation of aerial photographs.

We maintain a state-of-the-art soils laboratory in our headquarters in Orlando Florida. Our experienced technicians employ our substantial physical resources to conduct the following tests related to earth dam analysis and inspection.

  • Triaxial Compression
  • Soil Permeability
  • Moisture/Density Relationships
  • Soil Classification
  • Direct Shear
  • Sediment Studies
  • Drain Materials Analysis
  • Synthetic Liner Testing

Hydrology and hydrogeological services play an important role regarding analysis of dams. Specific hydrology services supplementing our earthen dam experience include:

  • Water-budget determinations
  • Rainfall-runoff investigations
  • Lake hydrology
  • Works of the District permits
  • Surface Water Management permits
  • Dredge and Fill permit inputs
  • Streamflow monitoring
  • Intermittent stream determinations
  • Flood or low flow frequency analyses
  • Crest-stage gage monitoring
  • Dam break analyses
  • Dam overtopping investigations

Dr. Anwar E. Z. Wissa, President of Ardaman & Associates, Inc., played a role in drafting the revisions of Chapter 62-672 of the Florida Administrative Code which relates to Safety Regulations for Earthen Dams for Phosphate Mining and Processing Operations in 1972. More recently, Dr. Wissa was appointed by the Governor of Florida to a committee tasked with drafting a similar set of rules regarding dam safety outside the phosphate industry. He also represented the State on the Board of Consultants evaluating the Florida Power and Light Dam in Martin County following its failure.
