Ardaman & Associates, Inc. Environmental Remediation Ameristeel Tampa Mill Tampa, Florida From
1958 to 1995, AmeriSteel manufactured steel products on a 77-acre industrial site in Tampa, Florida. During the early years of its operating history, the site became contaminated with lead and PCBs at levels exceeding subsequently established government limits. Ardaman & Associates, Inc. was selected to provide permitting, design and construction quality assurance services for remediation of the site. The contamination assessment included performing more than 600 borings and test pits as well as chemical analyses of thousands of soil and groundwater samples. |

Remediation involved constructing a 10-acre, on-site landfill, excavating and disposing of 450,000 tons of contaminated material, and closing the landfill. Negotiations with federal and state regulatory officials on cleanup criteria for the site and disposal options for the contaminated fill continued for more than five years. Design, contracting and cleanup were completed in approximately two years. The total on-site remediation cost was less than $15 per ton of contaminated fill, compared to an estimated cost of more than $200 per ton for off-site transportation, treatment and disposal of the materials. The site is currently available for future industrial development.
